The Circle Closes: René Benko and the Horten Legacy

A project about Helmut Horten would be incomplete today without mentioning the name René Benko. Why? Because Benko is the man who led the department stores that once belonged to Horten into the largest bankruptcy in Austrian history.

Our narrative connections:

• From Blood to Concrete: Horten built on the suffering of Aryanization victims (Alsberg). Benko built on the real estate of these houses.
• Speculative Pointillism: Benko is the master of valuation. Many small, artificially increased real estate values resulted in a fictitious billion-dollar mosaic.
• The Political Axis: Both Horten and Benko maintained closest contacts with the ÖVP leadership (especially the Kurz era).
